Virtual Team Building Events

Activity Description

Objective: As the board game, the object is to capture the other team’s territories (cones).

To start: Field is divided into 2 sides with cones hidden within playing field (should be played outside in the woods or tall grasses). Each team is given a few minutes (5-10) to hide their cones/territories within their boundary (like capture the flag). Each player then begins with 1 dye and stands next to a cone/territory, a dye is placed on top or underneath each cone.

Play: Players must find enemies territories and conquer them. There are two ways to conquer a territory. First, a player can take a dye from an unguarded territory simply by knocking the cone over and picking up the dye. Second, if an attacker finds a defender at a territory they must battle with their dice Risk/board game style. If the attacking player roles a higher number than the defending player the losing player loses a die and it is placed in the dead dice bag at the cone (ties go to the defender).

Attackers can keep attacking (so long as they have a dye) until the defender is out of dice (defender can choose to steal the dye at the cone to defend but if he loses the cone it is then conquered. The defender can regain dice by finding abandoned enemy cones or by allies sharing their dice. If the defender retreats the attacker wins the territory and symbolizes it by knocking the cone over.

Defenders do not have to stay at cones they can run around their half and try to defend multiple cones at once. Example: if an attacker spots a cone the defender can try to beat the attacker to the cone, if the defender gets there first they then battle with their dice to see who wins. If the attacker gets there first he must retrieve the dye and knock the cone over before the defender reaches the cone, if he fails to do so they then battle.

Conquered cones can be recaptured by the conquered territories team placing any extra dye at the conquered cone.

The game requires cooperation and communication so that the defenders have enough dice to defend and the attackers have enough dice to attack. Since teams can share dice within teams an effective strategy may be for offensive players to return to their side and share extra dice with the defenders. It’s also up to each team how many players they want to have defended an attack.

Game Over: The game is over when all of a team’s territories have been conquered. This can happen quickly if a team is not recapturing their territories or it can take a long time depending on each team’s strategy. A time limit could also be placed on the game also so that at the end of a set period of time the team with the most territories remaining wins.

Logistics: A piece of cardboard or clipboard can be used to roll the battling dye. It can be placed under each cone. Some sort of bag or container (e.g. brown paper lunch bag) should be at each cone as well to hold “dead” dice.
